APPLICATION REVIEW
All applications for new members are reviewed by the Society’s Membership Committee and concurred upon by the Board of Directors. You will be notified shortly after review.
SONAME MEMBERSHIP APPLICATION
MEMBERSHIP GRADES
There are six (6) grades of membership. The requirement for each follows:
1. HONORARY MEMBER (HMSONAME)
This grade shall be accorded to distinguished persons who in the opinion of the Board have immensely contributed to the betterment of the Philippine maritime industry and have fully supported the Society’s causes.
2. FELLOW (FSONAME)
A Member, Affiliate or Associate Member, or a person eligible to become a Member, Affiliate or Associate Member, and who has held a position of prominent professional responsibility in the Philippine maritime industry for at least five (5) years may apply to be elected as Fellow.
3. MEMBER (MSONAME)
This grade may be accorded to persons having competence and important experience in naval architecture, marine engineering or other aspects of engineering or science closely allied with the marine industry.
A candidate who is a graduate of a recognized technical institution acceptable to the Society shall have had not less than five (5) years of increasingly important engineering or scientific experience indicative of growth, competency and achievement, at least two (2) years of which shall have been in responsible charge of work.
A candidate possessing a professional engineering license or equivalent will be deemed to have given evidence of engineering or scientific experience indicative of growth, competency and achievement with at least two (2) years shall be in responsible charge of work.
Alternatively, a candidate who is not a graduate of a recognized technical institution shall have had not less than nine (9) years of engineering or scientific experience indicative of growth, competency and achievement, at least two (2) years of which shall be in responsible charge of work.
A statement of training and experience which demonstrates that the candidate has been engaged in a responsible capacity in the marine field shall be filed by the candidate.
4. AFFILIATE (ASONAME)
This grade may be accorded to persons whose pursuits, attainment or practical experiences qualify them to cooperate in the advancement of the objectives of the Society.
A candidate shall have had a sound education and shall have had not less than five (5) years of increasingly important experience indicative of growth, competency and achievement, at least two (2) years of which shall have been in responsible charge of work.
Alternatively, a candidate who is not a graduate of a recognized institution of learning shall have had no less than nine (9) years of increasingly important experience indicative of growth, competency and achievement, at least two (2) years of which shall be have been in responsible charge of work.
5. ASSOCIATE MEMBER (AMSONAME)
This grade may be accorded to persons whose pursuits, attainments education or practical experience qualify them to cooperate in the advancement of the objectives of the Society, but who have not held a position of sufficient responsibility or lack the experience required for the grade of Member or Affiliate.
Associate Members shall be eligible to transfer to the grade of Member or Affiliate after fulfilling the necessary requirements.
6. STUDENT MEMBER
This grade may be accorded to students of naval architecture, marine engineering or allied branches of engineering in technical institutions recognized by the Society.
Upon completion of the course in a recognized technical institution and upon graduation, Student Members shall be automatically transferred to the grade of Associate Member.
