During the Annual General Membership Meeting of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, distinguished maritime dignitaries attended the affair, namely; Rep. Jesulito A. Manalo of ANGKLA Partylist, House of Representative, Hon. Maximo Q. Mejia – Administrator of Maritime Industry Authority and Mr. Dennis D. Decena – President and CEO of DBP Leasing Corp. These guests were all inducted as Honorary Members of SONAME.
During this Annual General Membership Meeting, Rep. Manalo of ANGKLA Partylist, announced the filing of the House Bill No. 3270 re our revised NAME Law entitled “An Act Modernizing the Practice of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering in the Philippines and repealing for this purpose Republic Act 4565, otherwise known as “The Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Law”. This proposed law was aim to modernize the present law which was promulgated since June 19, 1965 in order to promote better maritime safety for Filipinos and be one of the essential pieces of legislation which shall propel our country to be a true maritime power. Some of the highlights of this proposed law are as follows:
- Having an Integrated and Accredited Professional Organization
- Implementation of continuing professional education and/or development programs promulgated by the Board and/or the Commission. Compliance to these continuing educational and development programs shall be one of the requirements for the maintenance of membership in good standing of theprofessional in the Accredited Professional Organization.
- All members should be of good standing of this Accredited ProfessionalOrganization shall be issued a membership card indicating the membership number and validity period which shall be affixed to all plans, specifications and any document signed by the member in the course of his practice of the profession. Failure to maintain membership in good standing in the Accredited Professional Organization shall be a cause for delisting in the roster of professionals.
- Modernization of subjects to be included in the examination. The examination for naval architect and marine engineer shall consist of written tests which shall cover subjects prescribed by the Board and include at least the following: general engineering, naval architecture, marine engineering, ship design and construction, compliance to maritime rules and regulations and such other pertinent subjects as the Board may deem necessary.

As part of the Annual program, SONAME with PRC Board on Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering; Engr. Rosalio A. Quirante as Chairman and Engr. Edward Cruz and William Hernandez as Members led the Induction of the new Board Passers for Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering for 2013. Following are the Top 3 during this year’s Board Exam:
- Julimar C. Ponce of Univesity of Cebu with 88.60%
- Jacklyn R. Antolihao of Univesity of Cebu with 88.00%
- Earl John B. Ponteras of Univesity of Cebu with 87.70%
There are total 48 successful board passers out of 88 students. These new Board Passers were likewise inducted as New Associate Members of SONAME.
